Research experience
1. Mitochondrial targeting of nutrtional intervention on age related macular degeneration (AMD). Degeneration of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cell is considered major cause that induces AMD, while oxidative stress induced mitochondrial dysfunction is closely related RPE degeneration. Using ARPE-19 cell model, I have selected several nutritients that prevent oxidative stress induced RPE cell death by activating mitochondrial biogenesis, improving mitochondrial function and inducing phase II enzymes.

2. Mitochondrial dynamic regulation in obesity, diabetic development and effects of nutrional intervention. Mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with development of obesity and diabetes. I’m interested in finding out how mitochondrial dynamic including mitochondrial biogenesis, degradation, fusion, fission affect mitochondrial function during obesity and diabetic progression. Using several cell and animal models, I intent to find effective nutritients which could inhibit obesity, diabetes, and associated fatty liver development by regulating mitochondrial function.

3. Involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in prenatal stress induced offspring congivitive decline and effects of nutritional intervention. It has been well indicated that prenatal stress could induce offspring cognitive decline. My study showed that prenatal stress induced mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative damage in offspring hippocampus might be the major cause. Besides the well-know role in children brain development, I found novel role of docosahexaenoic acid (22 :6n-3 ; DHA) in protecting prenatal stress induced cognitive dysfuntion involving the modulation of mitochondrial functions and dynamics.

4. Autophagy and mitochondrial remodeling in long-term strenuous exercise. Physical exercise is considered to exert a positive effect on health. While, I found strenuous or excessive exercise causes fatigue and damage to muscle and immune functions thereby decrease endurance capacity. I’m interested in cross talking between autophay and mitochonrial dynamic during exercise.
